Description: Much of the development related to artificial intelligence has revolved around the concept of replacement. This concept is evident from self-driving cars to chatbot customer service to algorithmic recommendations of media and entertainment services. Something is, at least partly, being replaced by the introduction of solutions we talk about with the shorthand “artificial intelligence”. On the other hand, there exists a distinct pushback towards the concept of replacement as well. We speak of things that cannot or should not be replaced, but preserved as uniquely human. For example, the increase in AI-generated art and music has sparked discussions and even a backlash where people express their disappointment with the pervasive “AI-slop” that seems to surround us more and more. Between these discussions about replacement and preservation there also exists a thought about AI augmenting human life and processes. This is evident, for example, in the increasing discussions about AI assistants allowing the human colleague to be more effective and in the attempts of trying to make decision-making processes less-biased with an AI integration. This open seminar aims to address these and other topical issues related to the adoption of AI solutions into working life and beyond. The seminar is hosted by Crazy Town Jyväskylä, and organized in collaboration between two ongoing research projects funded by the Research Council of Finland: SYNTHETICA and GET:ORG.
